Synthesis, characterization and use of nano particles
Nano-materials are being widely explored for their use in varieties of biomedical applications like disease diagnosis, drug & gene delivery and intracellular imaging. We are involved in preparation and characterization of polymeric, silica and coated metal nano particles and evaluate these for potential applications in biomedical diagnosis and targeted drug delivery. Some of the nano particles synthesized by us are:
- Organically modified silica nanoparticles (ORMOSIL)

These are currently being used for studying: (i) the interaction (electrostatic and/or hydrophobic) with dyes/drugs and (ii) how these interactions can modulate the photodynamic efficacy of photosensitizers used for photodynamic therapy (PDT). |

Chemical attachment of drugs to these ORMOSIL particles is currently under investigation.
- Silver and gold nanoparticles
Silver and gold nanoparticles of various size and shapes( sphere, rods, prizm etc.) are being prepared in our division.

These are currently being investigated for studying the (i) Effect of shape on the non linear optical properties (e.g. Hyper-Rayleigh scattering and multi photon absorption induced luminescence) using a femtosecond laser and (ii) Effect of surface coating on the optical property and interaction with dyes/drugs.
